Peter Massini

Principal Policy & Programme Officer – Green Infrastructure

Peter has spent the majority of his 30-year professional career as an ecologist and natural environment policy maker in London. He started his career with the London Wildlife Trust and the London Ecology Unit, managing nature reserves and providing ecological advice to London boroughs.

Peter currently leads the Greater London Authority’s work on Green Infrastructure and the Mayor’s commitment to make London a National Park City. He has a particular interest in understanding how to make the natural environment more relevant in London by ensuring its many benefits are recognised as being an essential part of a liveable, resilient city.

Dusty Gedge

President of the European Federation of Green Roof and Wall Associations

Dusty is a Green Infrastructure consultant working in London, UK and Europe. He is the current President of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations (EFB and founder of Livingroofs.org and is a working group member of the EU GI and Ecosystem Services working group.

Biodiversity and birds on green roofs attracted him to this work 20 years ago. Nature is at the heart of his approach to Green Infrastructure (GI) whilst having a natural ability to deal with the issues cities face and an understanding of how vegetation can help cities adapt to climate change.

Dusty Gedge is a recognised authority, designer, consultant and public speaker on green roofs and urban Green Infrastructure. He has worked on GI projects in the UK for the last 17 years – some of which are recognised as seminal projects, especially in London – as well as advising on projects across the world through his consultancy firm Green Infrastructure Consultancy [GIC].

Dusty has also been a TV presenter on several UK shows and has recently started a podcast series – Adventures in Green Infrastructure and is also active on social media channels Twitter, Facebook and G+.

Dr Tom Young

STRI

Tom has worked at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) since 2014 as a Research Manager overseeing the day-to-day running of research projects involving collection, analysis and reporting of data, in addition to developing and assessing new technology for the sports industry. Tom completed a PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the Green Roof Centre, specialising in the design and optimisation of a green roof substrate for sponsor company, Boningale Nurseries. Tom has now established the STRI as the leading UK green roof substrate test house and co-developed the new UK Green Roof Organisation (GRO) green roof substrate standards in collaboration with GRO and the University of East London (UEL).

Joris Voeten

Senior Engineer Urban Green Space at Urban Roofscapes

With a MSc in Tropical Forestry from Wageningen University, Joris uses plant growth to create liveable and sustainable cities utilising concepts based on resilience and nature-based (circular) solutions. By designing and developing new systems to create functional green space in cities, such as innovative multifunctional vegetated rooftops, the aim is to bring the circular ecosystem approach into urban development. Energy use reduction, human health, stormwater attenuation, material reuse, biodiversity and urban heat island mitigation play a key role in all of the functional designs and concepts; each with its own structure, water management system and material selection.

Dr Phil Askew

Director Landscape at Peabody

Phil is Director of Landscape & Placemaking at Peabody, leading on Thamesmead, London’s New Town and one of London’s largest regeneration and development projects. His background is Horticulture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, leading on major regeneration and Green Infrastructure projects. Prior to his current role he led the design and delivery of the London 2012 Olympic Park at the Olympic Delivery Authority and its transformation into the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the UK’s largest new urban park in over a century.

Martin Kelly

Chair of TDAG

Martin Kelly is a qualified Landscape Architect and Urban Designer and is a Fellow of the Landscape Institute, Fellow of the Institute of Highways and Transportation and Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. Following three years in the public sector, Martin joined Derek Lovejoy Partnership (now Capita) in 1979, where he became a Partner in 1986 and Managing Director in 1996. During this time, he has specialised in environmental land planning for major landmark projects on behalf of public and private sector promoters in the UK and overseas. Martin is the Chairman and Founder of the Trees and Design Action Group (TDAG) and Chair of the TDAG Trust.

Martin has been responsible for the successful delivery of a wide range of Land Planning Studies in the International market. These include major Infrastructure, Resort Developments and Urban Regeneration in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. These projects include Site Delivery on the London 2012 Olympics; Formula 1 Racetrack Masterplan Mumbai; Euro Disney Paris; Southampton Container Terminal; Middle Eastern Leisure Resorts; Gose Island Resort Albania and Terminal 5 Heathrow.

Martin chaired the Landscape and Urban Design workshop for the Farrell Review into Architecture and the Built Environment undertaken at the request of the Government.

Ben Shuttleworth

Cloud Water Control

Ben Shuttleworth is the Business Development Director for Cloud Water Control which specialises in providing bespoke water management systems for the irrigation and drainage of sports arenas and urban Green Infrastructure. After graduating with a B.Sc. in Biology, Ben started as a product development manager developing sustainable drainage systems and components. Ben began developing Cloud Water Control in 2016 and now leads a team of drainage, electrical and software engineers that design, build and install cloud-based water management systems worldwide.

Steve Wilson

Cloud Water Control

Steve is Technical Director of the Environmental Protection Group Limited. He is a UK-registered ground engineering adviser and has had a wide-ranging career in geotechnical and environmental engineering.

Steve has demonstrated that SuDS can be used on any site in the UK to provide cost-effective surface water drainage systems. Steve also undertakes research and development work that helps to dispel the myths that surround the use of SuDS. Most recently, Steve has been busy helping Landscape Architects successfully design retrofit schemes in a number of different locations, whilst helping write guidance on SuDS Construction.

Dan Cook

Dan Cook is CEO at the Landscape Institute – the professional body that works to the benefit of people, place and nature. Since joining the Landscape Institute, Dan has worked with its members to adopt a new strategy, focused on delivering updated and more relevant entry standards; lifting its influence, promoting the value of landscape and attracting more people to the profession to address known skills shortages. During his career, Dan’s expertise covers strategy, business planning, insight, politics and public affairs, with experience spanning Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Sue Illman

Managing Director of Illman Young

Sue Illman is Managing Director of Illman Young, a Landscape Architectural practice based in Cheltenham, and was President of the Landscape Institute from 2012-2014.

Whilst her practice works across most planning and development sectors, she is probably best known for her advocacy work promoting integrated water management and SuDS through inter-professional collaboration. Catchment management alongside the integration of grey, green and blue in our urban landscape has never been more relevant, and is a subject that Sue continues to promote; a role that has been recognised in her current position as Champion for Flood Mitigation and Resilience on behalf of the Construction Industry Council (CIC).

Sue was a co-author of the new SuDS Manual, launched in November 2015 by CIRIA, and is lead author for the new SuDS Construction guidance published by CIRIA in November 2017.

Kadine James

Learner, maker, innovator and 3D technology enthusiast, Kadine James is Hobs Studios 3D Tech Lead and is a prominent evangelist. Combining 6+ years’ experience in 3D Printing, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality. She’s driven by big ideas, a global mindset and empowering the use of 3D printing in art and architecture. Kadine is especially committed to the next generation of future digital leaders, makers designers and VR artists/gamers. She is also collaborating with international galleries, leading contemporary artists/architects and is a STEM ambassador and technology correspondent with Planning TV. A Maker and VR producer and Curator, Kadine has produced one of the largest 3D printed Master Plan Projects in the UK, whilst also creating 3D printing and VR projects the for the public realm along with working with leading VR artists. She specialises in immersive experiences for broad and diverse audiences and leads the 3D Academy which delivers career pathways in 3D printing VR/AR/MR at Hobs Studios with The Mayor of London and London Legacy.

Nicholas Wright

National Project Manager - Water Management Solutions

Nicholas Wright has nine years’ experience in commercial above-ground drainage, having started his career with Polypipe Terrain in technical sales. Working with M&E Contractors, he was heavily involved with above-ground drainage solutions on prestigious projects such as St. George’s Park, Harry Potter World, and Sheffield University School of Engineering.

After five years in Technical Sales, Nicholas headed up Polypipe Terrain’s above-ground Water Management Solutions department, as National Project Manager, where he and his team focused on shallow attenuation on roofs and podiums. Four years on, he’s now heavily involved with developing the Polypipe roof and podium offering and delivering many key projects, such as One Tower Bridge, One The Elephant and Trafalgar Place as part of the Elephant and Castle regeneration. Now part of Polypipe’s Water Management Solutions department, he continues to develop major roof and podium projects whilst assisting the wider team, working closely with our partners and continually improving our above-ground offering.

Phil Tomlinson

InfraGreen 
Business Manager

From 2014-2018, Phil Tomlinson was Managing Director of InfraGreen Limited. Prior to the launch of InfraGreen, Phil worked for Permavoid Limited and was responsible for developing the UK business across market sectors including highways, residential and sports. In 2011 he was involved in the first ArborRaft Tree installation in the UK within the London Borough of Southwark.

During his early career, Phil spent 12 years working for Aggregate Industries, holding a range of both operational and commercial roles. Between 2005 and 2010 he led the team responsible for developing Aggregate Industries into a leading supplier of Sustainable Drainage Systems in the UK. During this period Phil was responsible for the production of the Aggregate Industries SuDS Design guide, he co-authored a technical paper on the development of geocellular sub-base replacement systems and he was a member of the steering committee responsible for delivering the UK Highways Agency Reservoir Pavement report. From the start of 2018, InfraGreen became part of the Polypipe family.

Andy Cullum

Sales & Marketing Director for Polypipe Civils

With an accomplished career, Andy Cullum, Sales & Marketing Director for Polypipe Civils, is at the leading edge of research and development for Green Infrastructure. A civil engineer himself, previously working at Sir Robert Mcalpine, helping to build extensions to Bicester retail village and roads round Eton rowing lake, Andy now leads his team at Polypipe Civils with a customer-focused approach and understands the ever growing needs of the industry.

With a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham as the foundation to his knowledge, he’s able to complete schemes effectively, efficiently and to manage water intelligently. Also, Andy shows a keen interest in cycling, running and football and when he’s not working towards adopting healthy environments within construction at work, he’s working on his own health and fitness at home too.

Sean Robinson

Specification Director - Water Management Solutions

Sean Robinson is the Specification Director at Polypipe Civils with over 18 years’ experience in the building industry, 15 of which are with Polypipe Civils. Starting in sales, providing quotations for bespoke solutions, Sean has advanced increasingly to where he is today. Today, Sean manages a team of specification specialists who work alongside engineers, architects, landscape architects and local authorities encouraging early involvement with Polypipe’s Permavoid Sub-Base replacement oil treating system, Polystorm conventional deep underground attenuation and soakaway tanks and Permavoid blue/green roofs and podium decks, all of which are fundamental to the development of Green Infrastructure today.

Sean finds solutions to industry challenges such as, climate change, planning requirements and new building techniques to meet regulations. His insight and immersive knowledge, dating back to his Science Degree, of industry requirements and the products and systems Polypipe manufacture and develop, all result in the inclusion of Blue-Green Infrastructure and biophilic design.

Matt Bradley

Project Specification specialist at Polypipe

Matt Bradley is a Project Specification Specialist at Polypipe Civils with over 25 years’ experience in the building industry, 15 of which are in specification/sales and 10 years as a precast concrete Draughting Engineer.

Before joining Polypipe in 2014, Matt worked for a diverse range of organisations, including Marshalls, Aquatek and Melton Concrete Products where he started as Drawing Office Manager. After showing a keen interest in sales Matt worked his way up to Regional Sales Manager.

Matt Works alongside Engineers, Architects, Landscape Architects and Local Authorities starting at RIBA stage 2 to offer assistance and creative solutions specialising in Polypipe’s Permavoid Sub-Base replacement oil treating system, Polystorm conventional deep underground attenuation and soakaway tanks and Permavoid Blue-Green roofs and podium decks.

Matt also presents CPD seminars to help develop and offer training, explaining the benefits of specifying Polypipe’s product portfolio and the support services they offer.
