As seen in recent weeks, our cold weather conditions in the UK during Winter and even early Spring, can adversely affect many homes, causing water pipes to expand, burst and leak. Ultimately this causes significant household damage, as well as triggering what has been reported as the most common type of homeowner insurance claim during the winter period – the escape of water, as a result of a water pipe bursting.
It also means that Water, one of our most important resources, is wasted meaninglessly.
At Surestop, we have created a list of tips, to help you prevent leaks in the home during Winter. To talk with us call 0845 643 1800.
What to do if a water pipe does burst:
- Immediately turn off your mains water at the stopcock. If a Surestop water valve is installed, simply press the lockdown button on the valve or if a version with the Surestop remote switch is installed, just flick its lockdown switch. If a brass stopock or valve is installed and it has seized up, seek urgent help from a qualified plumber.
- Once the water supply is stopped, turn on the cold taps to release any water sat within the pipes and flush the toilet at least once. Repeat this exercise again for the hot taps, after turning off the heating system. This will eventually drain the remaining water out of the pipe system.
- Urgently call a plumber or tradesperson who will be able to replace the section (s) of the burst pipe and finally, consult with your insurance provider.
- For future protection, if a brass stopcock or a brass valve is installed, consider getting a Surestop water control valves. There will be no need to remove or use the brass version.
